3-6 Oct 2004"Laser-Scanners for Forest and Landscape Assessment - Instruments, Processing Methods and Applications"

International Conference

Location:Freiburg

Organized by:Institute for Forest Growth (IWW) and Department of Remote Sensing and Land Information Systems (FeLis),
Faculty of Forest And Environmental Sciences - Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg

Information about the current state of and recent changes in landscape-creating elements and scenery (such as forests, lakes, meadows, etc.) are important basics for environmental assessment on different administrative levels.
During the last few years airborne as well as terrestrial laser scanning techniques have developed tremendously and now play an important role in landscape assessment. In addition to airborne laser scanning which has been successfully introduced as a means of collecting information on a regional level, terrestrial laser scanners can be used on a smaller scale to derive higher precision information.
Recent instruments, processing methods and their possibilities for use in forest and landscape assessment will be presented at this international conference.

Until the end of the 19th century many European forests were characterised by devastation and soil deterioration which caused fears of timber shortage. In order to counteract shortage in supply, many forest areas were reforested with coniferous trees. Consequently, even-aged coniferous forests were established on many sites naturally dominated by broadleaves. As a result, damages caused by storm, snow, ice, drought, insects, fungi and possibly soil degradation seem to occur more frequently in these secondary coniferous forests than in forests composed by site adapted species. Conversion or restoration of coniferous stands may reduce these risks and upgrade biodiversity and the genetic potential of forests. As the future wood markets, economic results of forestry, and various other goods and services, which forest ecosystems provide to society, are affected by present and future decision making all aspects of conversion must be well understood.

25-29 Jan 1999Forestry in Russia, Forest Resources and Their Use

The objective of this course ( LBII VS7 361b) is to provide basic information about the importance, management, and use of forests in Russia in view of the specific natural and social conditions. Main points of emphasis are the increasing globalization of timber markets, joint-venture networks and the consequences for forestry in Europe. This course will be carried out in cooperation with Russian and Finnish teachers (Prof. Chertov and colleagues, and Mrs. Myllynen) . It is open to students (in their 4th semester or higher) and professionals wishing to study the peculiarities of forestry in Russia in great detail. In the future we will try to initiate regular student exchange programmes with Russia and Finland. This course is an interesting first step in helping to bring about the necessary cooperation in the near future.

03-16 May 1998International Field Camp in Forestry

Field Camp Canada

From 3 to 16 May 1998, a common course in Freiburg and Vienna took place in cooperation with the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto, the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, as well as the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Freiburg. In Freiburg, the course was mainly organized by and held at the Institute for Forest Growth. A group of 25 students from Toronto/Canada, Sopron/Hungary, Brno/Czech Republic und Freiburg/Germay were given the opportunity to learn essential aspects of forestry in the partner countries and to compare them to the experiences made in their home countries.

In addition, the course was embedded in the course of studies of the respective faculties, so that the students were able to attain ECTS grades. Altogether, the Field Camp was very successful. The favourable feedback - especially from the students - is a motivating factor to maintain and extend the cooperation in the future. The corresponding visit in Canada is supposed to take place already in 1999.
